WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Former President Bill Clinton called for ABC to "tell the truth" in an upcoming miniseries about the events leading up to the 9/11 attacks.
Senior officials and advisers in Clinton's administration have attacked the accuracy of "The Path to 9/11," accusing filmmakers of including "fictitious" and even "false and defamatory" scenes of how they responded to the terror threat.
"I think they ought to tell the truth, particularly if they're going to claim it's based on the 9/11 commission's report," Clinton told reporters in Arkansas on Thursday.
"They shouldn't have scenes that are directly contradictory to the factual findings of the 9/11 commission. I just want people to tell the truth." (Watch one of the controversial scenes a Clinton official said never happened -- 2:52)
The film is scheduled to air with limited commercial interruption Sunday and Monday, the fifth anniversary of the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people.
The ABC network has rejected criticism, saying the film was not a documentary and no one had seen the final version as it was still being edited.
"No one has seen the final version of the film, because the editing process is not yet complete, so criticisms of film specifics are premature and irresponsible," the network said in a statement Thursday.
The New York Times quoted executive producer Marc Platt saying editing of the miniseries was going on and "will continue to, if needed until we broadcast."
The Times, citing Thomas H. Kean, the Republican who chaired the bipartisan 9/11 commission that investigated what led up to the attacks and who has been a consultant to the film, reported that a scene portraying former national security adviser Samuel R. Berger hanging up on a CIA officer at a critical moment is being altered. Two others under review, according to Kean, portray former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright apparently obstructing efforts to capture Osama bin Laden and Clinton being too distracted by impeachment and his marital problems to focus on bin Laden.
An ABC executive, who requested anonymity because the network is making only written comments, said small revisions have been under way for weeks, according to The Washington Post.
"These are people of integrity," The Post quoted Kean as saying of the filmmakers. "I know there are some scenes where words are put in characters' mouths. But the whole thing is true to the spirit of 9/11."
  'No such episode ever occurred'
Favorable reviews by conservative commentators who have seen the film have stoked the controversy. On Tuesday, Rush Limbaugh told his radio audience the film shows the Clinton administration was "afraid of failure and what it would mean to their approval ratings" when attacks on the al Qaeda terror network were being planned in the 1990s.
In addition to attacking the reported depiction of events that took place on their watch, Clinton advisers have complained that they have not been allowed to view the film for themselves. (Watch a 9/11 Commission member list inaccuracies in a proposed scene -- 3:30)
In the past week former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, former national security adviser Samuel Berger, Clinton Foundation head Bruce Lindsey and Clinton aide Douglas Band have written letters to Disney CEO Robert Iger to express dismay with the film.

"It is unconscionable to mislead the American public about one of the most horrendous tragedies our country has ever known," Lindsey and Band wrote.
They called the project "a fictitious rewriting of history" and urged it be shelved until "egregious factual errors" could be fixed.
Berger objected to the reported portrayal of him refusing to authorize a strike targeting bin Laden when CIA operatives had the al Qaeda leader in their sights.
"No such episode ever occurred -- nor did anything like it," he wrote to Iger. (Read Berger's letter -- .pdf file, requires Adobe Acrobat)
Plans to snatch bin Laden in Afghanistan in early 1998 were canceled by then-CIA chief George Tenet before any proposal was sent to the White House, according to the 9/11 commission's final report.
Kean, the commission's chairman, said he told ABC that the scene involving Berger was inaccurate, and he told CNN that ABC informed him it would revisit the scene
Albright called a reported depiction of her in one scene as "false and defamatory."
She said the scene shows her refusing to support a missile attack against al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden without notifying Pakistani officials, whose territory the missiles would have to cross. She said the film depicts her notifying Pakistan of the attack over U.S. military objections.
"Before you air your broadcast, I trust you will ensure you have the facts right," Albright wrote to Iger. (Read Albright's letter -- .pdf file, requires Adobe Acrobat)
It was Gen. Joseph Ralston, then vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who told Pakistani officials that a missile strike was under way against al Qaeda targets in Afghanistan. The disclosure was made to assure Pakistan that the missiles were not coming from their nuclear-armed rival India, the 9/11 commission reported.
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi have also joined in calling reported details of key scenes false and misleading.
In a letter to Iger, Reid said the reputation of ABC's parent company, the Walt Disney Corporation, would be "deeply damaged" if the film aired with those scenes intact.
ABC has said it will run a disclaimer four times during the broadcasts that declares, "The movie is not a documentary."

and there is no mention of reason Tenet used/gave for the cancellation.

MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- Accused al Qaeda operative Jose Padilla alleges he was tortured during more than three years in U.S. custody as an enemy combatant.

His mistreatment included threats of execution and being forced stand for long periods, Padilla charged in court papers filed in federal court in Miami, Florida.

Padilla's lawyers are asking a judge to dismiss the terror support charges against him because he suffered from "outrageous government conduct" during more than 1,300 days in military custody.

"Many of the conditions Mr. Padilla experienced were inhumane and caused him great physical and psychological pain," Padilla attorney Michael Caruso said in court papers. "The pain and anguish visited upon Mr. Padilla will continue to haunt him for the remainder of his life."

U.S. Attorney R. Alexander Acosta declined comment. Prosecutors and Defense Department officials intend to respond to the allegations by November 13.

Padilla, a 36-year-old former Chicago gang member, was declared an enemy combatant by President Bush in June 2002, shortly after he was arrested when he arrived at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.

U.S. authorities initially claimed he was on an al Qaeda mission to detonate a radioactive "dirty bomb" in a U.S. city.

He was held and interrogated at a Navy brig, where he was usually held in a small isolation cell, until he was transferred to civilian custody in January to face federal terrorism support charges in Miami along with two others.

Trial on those charges, which do not mention the "dirty bomb" allegations, is scheduled to begin January 22.

In court papers filed last month, Padilla claims:

Interrogators threatened him with "imminent execution" or with painful cuts.

He was often forced to wear a hood and stand in "stress positions" for long periods. Similar tactics were used by U.S. personnel at Iraq's notorious Abu Ghraib prison.

He was given a form of a "truth serum" drug that may have been LSD or PCP.

Noxious fumes were sometimes introduced into his cell and he was forced to endure extreme heat and cold, bright lights or total darkness, denied opportunities to shower for weeks and deprived of sleep.

He was not provided with a copy of the Quran, the Muslim holy book, for almost two years.

It is the first time that Padilla has made these detailed allegations about his treatment. His lawyers cited no corroborating evidence or witnesses.

The Bush administration has repeatedly said it does not torture prisoners despite aggressive interrogation tactics, especially in the war on terrorism, that have drawn broad criticism from international human rights groups.

Caruso acknowledged in the documents that such dismissal requests are rarely granted.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- North Korea lashed out Saturday at Japanese officials as "political imbeciles" for saying they won't accept Pyongyang as a nuclear power, and said Tokyo shouldn't take part in talks on the North's atomic program
North Korea's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that "there is no need for Japan to participate in (the talks) as a local delegate because it is no more than a state of the U.S. and it is enough for Tokyo just to be informed of the results of the talks by Washington."
Japan is a common target for the North's hostile rhetoric, stemming from Tokyo's imperial occupation of the Korean peninsula in the early 20th century. Pyongyang has called before for Japan to be excluded from the talks.

The North agreed this week to return to the arms negotiations -- which also include China, Russia, the U.S. and South Korea -- in the first relaxation of tension after its October 9 nuclear test.
The talks had been on hold since November 2005, with Pyongyang refusing to attend because of a U.S. campaign to cut off its access to the international financial system due to alleged illegal activity.
On Saturday, the North said the international community had hailed the agreement on the renewed talks "while highly praising the (North's) invariable stand and sincere efforts for the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula."
"But it is only Japan that expressed its wicked intention, letting loose a spate of balderdashes," the ministry said, referring to comments that Tokyo won't accept a nuclear North Korea. "The Japanese authorities have thus clearly proved themselves that they are political imbeciles incapable of judging the trend of the situation and their deplorable position."
Noting the recent change of government in Japan with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe taking power, the North said Tokyo "must have a lot to do internally."
"It had better, therefore, mind its own business instead of poking its nose into the work of the talks to its inconvenience," the ministry said in the statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.
Japan wants to address the issue of its abducted citizens at the nuclear talks, a subject that the North insists it has settled after admitting to kidnapping 13 Japanese in the 1970s-80s. However, many Japanese have doubts over the North's claims about the victims' fates.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Support for President Bush's management of the Iraq war has dropped to an all-time low even as his overall approval remains tepid but steady, according to a CNN poll released Monday.
The survey, conducted Friday through Sunday by Opinion Research Corp., found support for Bush's handling of the Iraq conflict has decreased to 28 percent from 34 percent in a poll taken October 13-15.

And a record 70 percent of respondents said they disapproved of Bush's war management, up from 64 percent in the October poll. (Watch CNN's Bill Schneider's report on the poll )

Meanwhile, Bush's overall job approval was 36 percent -- down only 1 percentage point from the previous CNN poll to pose that question December 5-7.
