　　"Good night"(晚安）是常用的临睡前告别语，但sleep tight（睡个好觉）来得更亲切些。sleep tight 源于美国摇篮曲《晚安，宝贝》，"sleep tight and don't let the bedbugs bite"(睡个好觉，被让臭虫咬），tight在这里可以解释为soundly，well。也有说法认为，sleep tight的来历和海军偶直接关系，因为海军用的吊床只有把绳子勒紧时才会睡得舒服。在这里tight则有另一层含义---拉紧的，绷紧的。

　　和外国朋友喝酒聊天是很愉快的事，但酒足饭饱后总不能让客人买单吧。这时，赶快说一句:"I will foot the bill",以体现我们热情好客的传统。foot the bill 可不是指”踩着账单，赶快开溜“，而是指”付账“的意思。早在15世纪，人们便开始使用”foot the bill"这个短语，但当时指的是把所有的账目加起来算出总金额，然后写在账单的底部（foot the bill or acount),foot的意思相当于bottom。但很显然，这是店家的工作，没消费者什么事。但是到了19世纪，则轮到消费者“foot the bill”了，因为这个短语已经变成了“付账，买单”的意思，这个用法一直沿用到现在。

　　这里的curry与“咖喱”毫无关系，curry favor的意思是“讨好某人”，通俗点可说成“拍马屁”。curry在这里是动词，原意是为梳理马的毛，这一动作与“讨好”相联系源于14世纪法国诗人维特利的政治寓言《褐马传奇》。书中褐色老马Fauvel聪明、权威，人们为了私利常梳理它的毛，以示讨好，久而久之，to curry Fauvel就成了“阿谀奉承”的代名词。随着时间的推移，这个传说渐被遗忘，“拍马屁”也由to curry Fauvel变成了to curry favor。
