The Courtship of the Youghy-Bonghy-Bo”的诗里面有一句,“Down the slippery slopes of Myrtle ,这首诗的最后一句是To her Dorking Hens she moans,应该翻译成对着她的母鸡哭泣吗?

The metatarsus consists of the five long bones of the foot, which are numbered from the medial side (ossa metatarsalia I.-V.); each presents for examination a body and two extremities. These are analogous to the metacarpus bones of the hand.

  在Harry Potter还没出书之前,新概念的作者L.G.Alexander编过一本书叫Look,listen and learn,第四册第25课叫父亲和蛇怪三姐妹(Father and The Gorgons),我知道这个典故也是从这里知道的。

因此,在英语中产生了an apple of discord这个成语,常用来比喻any subject of disagreement and contention;the root of the trouble;dispute等意义

According to Greek mythology,in the war between the Greeks and the people of Troy, the Greeks besieged the city of Troy for nine years. Finally the Greeks built a large hollow wooden horse in which a small group of soldiers were concealed. The Greek army appeared to sail for home. The Trojans took the horse into the city, thinking the Gods had sent it.At night the Greek army returned and the hidden soldiers crept out of the horse and opened the city gates, and Troy was destroyed.

在美国常见的有carnation, tulip, rose, daisy, daffadil, may flower,etc... 其它的大部分人都不知道,就算听过这个名字也不知道长的什么样子, 而有的是因为其它的原因才为人所知,people know Myrtle cuz of Myrtle Beach, Jasmine cuz of rice (also Aladdin's lil girlfriend's name), and Cherry, well most americans know cherry as something that eventually gets popped....haha...

  Fertile Myrtle

  -----------------------------
The man who wrote "The Courtship of the Youghy-Bonghy-Bo" was Edward Lear.He was born in 1812 and he died in 1888.He was the youngest in a family of 21 children. His father was very rich, but lost all of his money before Edward grew up.When this happened,Edward's favorite sister,Ann,said she would look after her brother. She said she could teach him to draw, write and play the piano. She said she had to look after him because his health was so poor.

When Edward grew up,he became a well-known artist. He traveled to many parts of the world and drew pictures. For a time during his life he worked as an artist for Lord Derby. He often entertained Lord Derby's grandchildren with his beautiful "nonsense"poems. The children loved Mr.Lear and his poems.Though the poems are very amusing,Edward Lear was often ill and unhappy. He never married and he led a lonely life-even though he became quite famous and people everywhere wanted to meet him. Here are a few lines he wrote about himself:

  How pleasant to know Mr.Lear
Who has written such volumes of stuff!
Some think him ill-tempered and queer,
But a few think him pleasant enough.
