“melting pot “除了坩锅，还有什么别的意思吗？

　　而且曾经还有本比较风靡的书,是一个去美国的中国人写的.名字就叫<Melting Pot>作者名字忘记了.他用英文写的.

　　我想不单可以用来指美国社会，我们不是常说社会就是一个大熔炉么。

　　melting pot的意思有两个：1 a containier in which metals or other substances are melted; 2 a country, place, or area in which immigrants of various nationalities and races are assimilated.第二个意思当中，“of various nationalities and races”只是一层意思，“assimilated”即“同化”是非常重要的另一个方面。
　　
　　另外，就美国来说，以前人们倾向认为其是一个melting pot，但后来，人们觉得这种讲法抹杀了各民族移民之间的个性，所以，现在会有人用“mosaic”形容美国社会，指各种各样的文化像色彩斑斓、各自独立的马赛克一样拼成了一幅美丽的文化整体图景。
