If we can accept the fact that English is used as an ornament, we cannot accept the fact that it is used as a tool to make money. If we can put up with someone’s making money with English, we can never tolerate the fact that they make dirty money with it.
There are many “varieties of English” in China.
Long ago, an authoritative newspaper in China abruptly put forward a long “report” that Mr. F form Taiwan invented a “TW” English. People were stirred up in no time. A golden chance for English learning had come! “English can be learned fast” is the truth that was spread all over the country, together with Mr. F’s textbooks. “English can only be learned gradually” was not to be heard although it was the voice form renowned professors in China.
Decades later, among those who have been holding Mr. F’s textbook, many turned to “Master Li” again for another shortcut of English learning, a shortcut more CRAZY than Mr. F’s, of course a more expensive one, along which millions of dollars flew to the master’s pocket.
When this land was cultivated into a luxuriant green forest, those masters found it was no longer easy to find someone who is willing to be their disciple. Then they cleverly made a slogan, imitating Mr. Deng Xiaoping’s words, that “People should begin to learn English from their babyhood” and of course money should be obtained from the baby’s parents. Once the kids are happy, the parents wallet would be loose. This is a LADDER for those masters’ to skyrocket their asset.
Looking back at those days, that report in that authoritative newspaper should be regarded as the origination of the instrumental function of English in China. It is an epoch-making report and should have a significant position in the history of English. One thing we cannot now is, how much did the writer earned from the composing of that report. Isn’t it a pity!
Great as China is, the Chinese language has never achieved such grandeur. Isn’t it a pity!
