  尽管海滨房产在世界任何发达国家都是优质资产,富豪趋之若鹜,但海南人并不以为然,更不热衷于住在海边。

  广为流传的说法是住在海边比较潮湿、电器容易坏掉。

  海滨的确有这样的情况,但我们是否注意到住在海边的益处呢?

  我在BING搜索引擎上用英文检索“ 住在海边的益处”,竟然看到3000多万条相关文章或研究报告,阐明一个主题:

  新西兰与美国的一项研究发现,在海边生活能够促进心理健康。

  著名医学杂志《柳叶刀》一项新研究指出,中国约1.73亿人有精神疾病,包括焦虑、抑郁和强迫症等,其中1.58亿人从未接受过专业治疗。2003年至2008年,精神疾病的发病率增长了50%以上,大多数病例源于生存压力增大。

  抑郁焦虑越来越常见

  世界卫生组织2009年发布报告称,精神疾病患者在中国人口中的比例为7%,已超过心脏病和癌症,成为中国医疗体系少有负担。而按照《柳叶刀》杂志较新公布的数据计算,国人患精神疾病的人口比例至少超过12%,比2009年增加5个百分点以上。

  北京市心理危机研究与干预中心主任、北京大学教学医院北京回龙观医院院长杨甫德教授在接受《生命时报》记者采访时,表示了对较新数据的认可。他告诉记者,北京回龙观医院2009年发布的一项调查显示,如果将酒精成瘾等精神障碍包括在内,我国各类精神疾病的总患病率已达17.5%。

  在各种精神疾病中,抑郁症和焦虑症相对普遍。数据显示,2011年,我国有超过2.6亿人出现抑郁症状,抑郁症导致的自杀死亡人数甚至超过了交通事故的死亡人数。针对焦虑症,我国虽然缺少全国性数据,但按照一些省份调查的5%~7%患病率计算,估计全国有6000万以上的焦虑症患者。其中,90%的患者在35岁前发病,且病程较长,比如,社交焦虑障碍平均病程长达20年,会严重影响个人工作和生活。更需要引起重视的是,焦虑和抑郁还是一对“难兄难弟”,共病率高达19.2%~50%。

  生存压力催生精神障碍

  《柳叶刀》杂志文章指出,生存压力日益增大成为中国人精神疾病逐年增加的主要原因之一。

  相对而言,中青年人群承受的压力更加明显。加班,累身累心;不加班,房子、车子、孩子都可能没了着落。特别是在北京、上海等一线城市,买房要资格、买车等摇号,这种生活处处是无奈。

Yet, recent studies prove that a beach-type environment can have a profound impact on our brains and mental health.

  Although few people deny the importance of brain health, most of us don't focus as much effort on taking care of our brains as we do our bodies. The misnomer that physical fitness trumps mental health is at our detriment. The reality is that we need balance, both mentally and physically.

  Numerous studies help us appreciate why the beach may be the premier destination for us to unwind and recharge our minds.

  Several months ago I partook in a deprivation float (the practice that many superstars such as, Steph Curry swear by). As my mind reached a meditative state, I could not help but hear a sound similar to that of waves crashing gently on the beach. This repetitive sound that was created as a result of my rhythmic breaths and my ears being submerged in salt water instantly put me at ease.

  "These slow, whooshing noises are the sounds of non-threats, which is why they work to calm people," says Orfeu Buxton, an associate professor of biobehavioral health at Pennsylvania State University. "It's like they're saying: "Don't worry, don't worry, don't worry." The sound of waves can help you achieve a meditative state, which is proven to heal and strengthen your brain.

  Studies have shown that different colors often produce different psychological, emotional, and physical effects. The color blue, for instance, is often used in marketing material to convey a sense of calmness. The Global Healing Center advises individuals to actually surround themselves in blue as a way to reduce stress.

  According to Richard Shuster, PsyD, clinical psychologist, he agrees that blue has a profound calming effect on people. "Staring at the ocean actually changes our brain waves' frequency and puts us into a mild meditative state," says Shuster.

  Doctors particularly recommend the kind of climate therapy you get by the sea for asthmatics and people with allergies or skin problems. The healing powers of a bracing climate are particularly effective in autumn and winter, because it is at these times of year that people with respiratory problems are most affected by the dry air caused by central heating, damp cold and air pollution.

  The reason sea air is so healthy is that it contains tiny droplets of sea water enriched with salt, iodine, magnesium and trace elements, which are scattered into the air by wind and waves.

  Known as surf-generated aerosols, these stimulate immune reactions by the skin and respiratory organs. A period of inhalation will result in the loosening of the mucus in the respiratory tracts, which makes coughing easier and so helps clear airways. \

  WASHINGTON — The age-old wisdom that being near the seaside is good for your health may be true, studies suggest.

  People often focus on the threats the ocean poses to human health, whether it's storms and floods, harmful algal blooms or pollution. But research shows that spending time by the ocean has many positive effects on health and well-being, epidemiologist Lora Fleming of the University of Exeter in England, said here on Wednesday (June 26) at a science policy conference of the American Geophysical Union.

  The notion that being near a beach makes one feel healthy is not new, of course. Doctors were prescribing trips to the shore or visits to "bathing hospitals" — special clinics that offered seawater bath treatments — as early as the 18th century. But only recently have scientists begun studying the ocean's health benefits experimentally, Fleming said.

  Fleming's colleagues at the University of Exeter's European Centre for the Environment and Human Health have begun a project called "Blue Gym" to study how natural water environments can be used to promote human health and well-being


  In one experiment, study participants were shown photographs of ocean views, green fields or cities, and asked how much they were willing to pay for a hotel room with each of those views. People were willing to pay more for the room with an ocean view, the results showed.

  When you put a person in a beach environment, "It's not going to be any great surprise to you that people relax," said study researcher Mathew White, an environmental psychologist at Exeter. The question, he said, is how many people experience such health effects, and how much they impact people's health.

  White and colleagues have also looked at census data in England to see how living near a coast affects people's health. They found that people who lived closer to the coast reported better health.

  It's possible that the people living closest to the coast are simply wealthier and have better access to health care. But the study found that the health benefits of ocean proximity were greatest for socioeconomically deprived communities.

  The researchers also looked at the effect of moving near a coast. Moving closer to the sea "significantly improves people's well-being," White said — by about a tenth as much as finding a new job. The seaside environment may reduce stress and encourage physical activity, he added.

  The researchers are now doing lab experiments to study the physiological benefits of coastal life. In the experiments, people in stressful situations, such as dental surgery, look at either a virtual beach, or the dental room. The trial is ongoing, but early studies suggest people report feeling less pain when immersed in a beach setting.

  These studies suggest ocean exposure could be a useful form of therapy, Fleming said. For instance, surfing might improve the well-being of troubled kids, she said
