Opposition leader MC has returned to Zimbabwe to campaign against current president RB. Mr. C told reports in the capital H that he is confident of winning. But he called for election observers and peacekeepers to help make the election free and fair. The 2nd presidential election is set for June 27th. The opposition leader postponed his return last week because of stories that someone might try to kill him. The government and the ruling party have denied plotting to kill the opposition leader. Mr. C left Zimbabwe shortly after the first election on March 29th. Official results from that election showed that he beat Mr. M but he did not receive the majority of votes needed to avoid a second election.
The United Nations has cleared an area at an airport in the capital of Thailand for transporting aid to cyclone survivors in Burma. UN Secretary General BGM opened the area Saturday. On Friday, he met with Burma’s military rulers about relief efforts. Later he said Burma’s top leader agreed to permit all foreign aid workers into the country to help with relief efforts. Burma’s military rulers have refused to let foreign aid workers enter and begin major relief efforts. Also Saturday, Burma’s military rulers are holding the second part of the Constitutional election in areas destroyed by Cyclone N on May 3rd. Burma’s military government says that 78 thousand people were killed in storm and that 56 thousand others are missing.
China’s Premier WJB says the number of dead from last week’s earthquake in Southwestern China has passed 60 thousand and could rise above 80 thousand. Chinese officials have not given up hope of finding more survivors in coalmines damaged by the May 12th earthquake. Rescuers in Southwestern China have spent the past 12 days trying to reach at least 24 miners trapped underground in 3 coalmines. The United Nations Secretary General BGM visited the earthquake area Saturday. Mr. B praised China’s quick response to the disaster. He said the whole world supports China’s efforts. The United Nations has increased its offer of emergency aid to 8 million dollars. Local officials say it may take up to 3 years to rebuild parts of SC destroyed by the earthquake. More than 5 million people are still without homes.
Russian President DM says his country’s relationship with China is now a driving force in the world. He told Students in the Peking University that the international community can no longer make major decisions without the 2 countries. Mr. M is on his first official foreign trip since becoming Russia’s president. On Friday, Mr. M and Chinese President HJT signed a one-billion-dollar agreement for Russia to build a uranium enrichment center in China.
